From steel and stone, to brick, brass and timber, the Urban style demonstrates that interior design doesn’t always mean colour!
Perfect for people who want an edgy, architectural styled home and a relaxed ambience, this style is all about harnessing those raw and natural Australian materials.
The key elements of the Urban home include:
Large feature rugs in a solid neutral colour or a pattern.
Brushed metal featured in tapware, sinks, and accent details.
Concrete or natural stone inspired benchtops to enhance the natural look.
Raw and textured timbers throughout the home to create strength and contrast.
We’ve spent this month discussing the essence of Urban interior design with MyChoice Design Studio’s Creative Consultant, Catherine Valente.
An Urban styled home is the perfect balance of old and new with inspiration from the natural environment using textures and materials to bring this style to life.
“The warmth of an Urban home draws you in especially around autumn and winter”, explains Catherine. “A base palette of warms whites allows you to add interest with pops of colour – think, red, navy, khaki, tan, mustard, and terracotta”.
Catherine explains that these gorgeous tones reflect how nature changes in the cooler months. “The leaves turn a mixture of brown and burnt orange and the nights get darker and richer”.
When styling your Urban home consider these trends that Catherine and our team have been noticing to be prominent for 2022:
Leather furniture
Tones like tan and weathered black deliver richness to offset cooler tones and materials.
Tactile textures
The successful use of materials like jute, cotton, linen, and woven fabrics – to name just a few – deliver the perfect natural element to your home.
Natural inspired surfaces and objects
With more time spent indoors than ever before, we continue to seek and strengthen our connection to nature. As a result, we have seen a resurgence in natural surfaces – think stoneware, terracotta, wood, and travertine being used across the board from floor to wall treatments, benchtops and even bathtubs. The raw, porous, imperfect nature of organic materials adds depth, soul, texture, and visual appeal while also creating a calming reflectiveness of the outdoors.
Out of all 4 of our Urban sub-styles Catherine claims the Organic sub-style is leading within the industry.
“Urban Organic explores our inherent yearning to connect with nature, to tap into wellness and spiritual health through the incorporation of soft tones, textual elements, and materials. This style is heavily reflected in the softer shapes of furniture which are becoming even more popular in the retail environment making it more obtainable for our MyChoice customers rather than being a bespoke design piece”.

Raw timber finishes on all cabinetry throughout the home enhance the natural look and bring an extra level of warmth to the home. View the beautiful contrast against the concrete inspired large format tiles that are carried throughout the home and into the wet areas. The living area is the hero of the home featuring a beautifully handcrafted stone feature wall highlighting that connection to nature.
“The Urban style allows raw and nature-inspired materials to be the hero. It delivers a sense of beauty, warmth, and simplicity without pretension or over-styling”.
Celebrating all things in their true beauty, the Urban style is designed to bring a sense of calmness to a chaotic world, creating the perfect escape for you and your family.
