Escape to the Country

Since the start of the pandemic, it has become more common for Aussies to uproot from their fast-paced city life and make the tree change to greener pastures in regional Australia.

With this lifestyle change becoming more prominent throughout pop culture, social media, and our everyday society, the modern country influence is enriching our homes and our lives.

Sharing similar characteristics to that of the cottage style the key elements of a country home include:

  • Muted landscape colours

  • Floral, gingham or striped fabrics on curtains and bedding

  • Warm toned timber featured furniture to support the patterning

  • Inspirational vintage furniture and décor pieces suited to this style

We’ve spent this month discussing this relaxed and heart-warming interior design style with our studio consultants and MyChoice Design Studio’s Creative Consultant, Catherine Valente.

First things first – what is Country styling?

Catherine says “The design of a modern country home is relaxed and minimal whilst still capturing the farm cottage style that we all love. Allowing aspects of minimal tones without being flashy, it’s all about practicality which is what makes it so appealing.”

Our Oak Flats interior design consultant Jodee added, “This style focuses on the idea of intimate spaces for families. It is a beautiful mix of textures and elements from different design styles, including Classic Hamptons and Vintage.”

Unlike a lot of other interior design styles Country is one of the few trends that can withstand the test of time. “Ensure that your home both externally and internally settle into the landscape instead of dominating it; this can be evoked through the use of neutral colours, elements and materials.” says Catherine.

Catherine and Jodee suggest considering incorporating these elements into your country home:

Timber:

Timber plays a massive part of this style and should be at the forefront of your mind when designing the inside of your home – timber should be your main flooring selection and can even be used in the bedrooms. Add a more traditional touch by laying floorboards in a herringbone pattern rather than straight.

Beautiful herringbone flooring is a key feature of the McDonald Jones San Marino Manor on display at Wongawilli. The warm tonal floorboards are a standout against the muted grey and white colour palette and create a sense of tradition.

Neutral tones:

Incorporate gentle browns, soft greys, creamy whites, and muted tones that reflect the natural environment.

Brighton Homes Melody 24 on display at Kalina - Springfield showcases the perfect neutral colour palette with muted hues like duck egg blue, eucalypt green and butter yellow evoked through the soft furnishings and décor. These tones pair perfectly with the light greys and crisp whites used in the architectural features.

Accessories and soft furnishings:

Aim for simplicity to make your home feel warm and welcoming. Try scattering soft patterned cushions and throws throughout the home to create balance against timber features.

You will feel immediately welcomed in the MOJO Homes Charisma 37 on display at Box Hill. Packed with charm, this country styled home is filled with beautiful vintage style accessories and soft furnishings that accentuate the larger furniture pieces in the display home.

Kitchens:

Include chunky profiled shaker or cove cabinetry in white or muted tones and pair with brushed brass, gunmetal or even matt black fixtures, tapware, and handles to complete the look.

Discover the country kitchen of your dreams in the MOJO Homes Carrington Grand One 31 at Huntlee. This light-filled kitchen features a timber look benchtop in Polytec Prime Oak Woodmatt to complement the Grafton profile Cabinetry in Classic White, which just oozes the country aesthetic.

With The Block taking over our screens for the next couple of months with their “Tree Change” Country Living inspired season, Catherine is expecting to see plenty of wall panelling and rich natured inspired wall colours. Jodee also thinks we should expect curves, curves and more curves! Plus, more period pieces to match the history of the home.

The country style is simple at heart and it’s here to stay.
